International Women’s Day/Week is HUGE SUCCESS! Mar 11, 2009 ( in News )

What a week it was!  A HUGE THANK YOU, to everyone who came and supported the various events I’ve been putting on in celebration of International Women’s Day.  With YOUR help, the Griffin pub have raised a grand total of £676.04 for Women In Action- the fabulous women’s charity based in the capital of Nicaragua.

The week started with our regular weekly pub quiz with a twist- every round was lady-related.  As ever it was a raucous affair, with everyone enjoying heckling Quizmaster James’ one-liners.   Tuesday night saw another brilliant music quiz, of course continuing on the female theme.  On Wednesday, the Griffin had its first ever proper wine tasting.  A complete sell-out, this event was brilliant.  Professional wine consultant Oliver Weston came in and talked us through an amazing 11 different wines.  We’ve even compiled a new wine list using the results of everyone’s scoring cards.  Quite possibly the most surreal event of the week was the Drag W.I Cake Sale- this brought all sorts of weird and wonderful characters out of the woodwork in their dresses.  Our own talented elders baked all the cakes on sale.  On Saturday, the fabulous Nikki, Griff and the Critters Connection played crowd-pleasing favourites to a merry, dancing pub.  The week’s grand finale was on Sunday, and, after a bit of re-jigging of the timetable, it was a brilliant success.  About 30 female musicians (and a token man in a head scarf- good work Nick, very cunning!) descended onto the Griffin, with their saxophones, guitars, cellos, ukuleles and of course voices.  Ending the night with a beautiful acoustic set, were mother and daughter duo, Nikki and Hayley Mascall- a perfect conclusion to a week centred on the importance of women.

As we go through a recession, times are hard for families here in the UK, and I can only imagine how much harder it is for those in a country as deprived as Nicaragua at this time.  I hope this money helps ease the difficult economic situation a little.

They are always looking for more sponsors for women and children- for less than £15 a month (only $20), you could send a child to school, or assist a woman to learn a new trade to support her family.

A special thank you goes out to all the musicians, bakers, helpers, drinkers and donators who worked towards making this week such a winner.  I will be in touch again very shortly, with news on what the project plan to use the money for.

Take care, and see you soon,  Charlie x
